Security Guard License (Unarmed Security Officer)
The State of Maine does not regulate individual security guards. Rather, the state regulates security guard companies. Training is at the discretion of the employer.
The security guard company must notify the commissioner of all employees who will perform security guard functions in the State before the date that the employee begins to perform security guard functions in the State.
Firearms Permits (Armed Security Officer)
A person who acts as a security guard may, while he is in the performance of his duties in that capacity, carry a loaded weapon in a motor vehicle which is being used to provide armored car service or which is otherwise transporting things of value, provided that any weapon carried is not concealed.
Permission to carry an exposed firearm while on duty is at the employer's discretion.
- NOTE: A Concealed Carry Weapon (CCW) permit does not qualify a security guard to carry armed.
Fingerprinting/Background Check
All security guards must undergo a background investigation within 60-days of employment.
