Security Guard License (Unarmed Security Officer)
Security guards and private security guard businesses are regulated under Public Act 330 of 1968, as amended. The Act defines a private security guard as an individual or employee of a business who offers for hire to provide protection of property on the premises of another.
Individuals guards are not licensed through the state. They are registered with the state through the private security guard business (employee roster).
Training and employment requirements are at the employer's discretion.
Firearms Permits (Armed Security Officer)
Training and employment requirements are at the employer's discretion.
Guards are still required to adhere to all state private citizen firearm laws, regulations, and ordinances.
- NOTE: A Carry Concealed Weapon (CCW) permit does not qualify a security guard to carry armed.
Fingerprinting/Background Check
To comply with Federal protocols, effective immediately, the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) will no longer be reviewing or determining fitness for employment of perspective employees. Submission of any documentation to LARA on new employees is no longer required.
However, employers will require a fingerprinting/background check before the guard stands a post.
LARA suggests using the Michigan State Police Internet Criminal History Access Tool (ICHAT) to ensure employees are fit for employment.
