Requirements to Become a Security Guard
The applicant must be:
- at least 18 years of age; 21 years old for armed.
- must have earned at least a high school ​diploma; a General Education Development (GED) certificate; or a four-year, post-secondary degree issued by an accredited degree-granting college or university.
- be of good moral fitness as determined by a criminal background check, department investigation or other reliable sources.
Security Guard License (Unarmed Security Officer)
Temporary Work Permits (PS-20) may be held for up to 120 days. The employer completes the temporary work permit and registers the employee with the State.
Basic classroom consists of 14-hours of live classroom instruction which may include use of a subject matter expert, audio and visual instruction. Instructors must provide individuals with a manual of the basic curriculum. Applicants must complete a closed-book written examination. All private security courses and examinations are based upon a curriculum approved by the Board.
All training must be delivered in English and assessments and written exams must be completed in English, without assistance.
To satisfy the training requirements for private security certification or licensure, training must be submitted to the Department within 180 days of the training being completed.
- NOTE: The actual license is issued by the State of Arkansas, not the trainer.
Firearms Permits (Armed Security Officer)
The basic firearms course consists of a minimum 24-hours of basic armed instruction, a written examination, safe gun handling test and marksmanship qualification.
An app​licant for certification as an armed private security professional or firearms instructor must not:
- Have been committed to the Mental Health and Development Disability Services Division under ORS 426.130, or similar order in another jurisdiction;
- Have been found to be mentally ill and subject to an order under ORS 426.130 prohibiting the person from purchasing or possessing a firearm as a result of that mental illness;
- Be prohibited under US Code Title 18, Section 922(g)(8) (relating to civil restraining orders including stalking or harassment) from possessing a firearm in interstate commerce; or
- Be prohibited under any law of this state or any federal law from purchasing, owning or possessing a firearm.
- NOTE: A Carry Concealed Weapon (CCW) permit does not qualify a security guard to carry armed.
Renewal and Continuing Education Requirements
The Armed annual refresher course consists of a minimum of 4-hours including the armed refresher course and exam and firearms marksmanship requalification.
In addition to the annual refresher course, armed private security professionals must complete an unarmed renewal training biennially.
The unarmed refresher course is 4-hours and requires passing a written examination.
Fingerprinting/Background Check
All Fingerprints are processed through Oregon State Police (OSP) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
Fingerprinting may be by ink cards (pre-printed FBI fingerprint cards) or by Fieldprint electronic fingerprints.
