Security Guard License (Unarmed Security Officer)
Secuity guard licensing is managed at the city level, when regulated at all. There are no overall state licensing requirements. Many private security guard licenses are managed by the local city police department.
For example, Rapid City licenses security guards in the same way the city licenses taxi cabs (even on the same application form!).
Firearms Permits (Armed Security Officer)
Training and employment requirements are at the local city's or employer's discretion.
Guards are still required to adhere to all state private citizen firearm laws, regulations, and ordinances.
- NOTE: A Carry Concealed Weapon (CCW) permit does not qualify a security guard to carry armed.
Fingerprinting/Background Check
Federal guidelines now require that all security guards be fingerprinted for a national background check.
