Requirements to Become a Security Guard
The applicant must:
- be at least 18-years old.
- be at least 21-years old (for firearms permit).
- be a high school graduate or hold the equivalent of a high school diploma.
- be free of mental condition or defect, which would interfere with the individual's ability to provide services in a professional and competent manner.
- have not committed an act which the board determines is indicative of bad moral character and which has a direct bearing on the applicant's ability to serve the public, including but not limited to offenses other than those listed in subsection three.
Proprietary Employer
A proprietary employer is a person who employs an individual to provide security for that person's own property or protection. A proprietary employer is not required to be licensed as a private security service if the employer does not offer or provide security services to others.
Apprentice Security Officer License (Unarmed Security Officer)
A minimum of 12 hours classroom instruction OR 12 hours of field service is required.
Active law enforcement cannot hold a license or work as a private investigator. However, off duty law enforcement can work as a security officer.
Security Officer License (Unarmed Security Officer)
A minimum of 1,000 hours field service and 32 hours classroom instruction is required. 1,000 hours is approximately 6-months when working 8-hours a day, 5-days a week.
Commissioned Officer License (Unarmed Security Officer)
A minimum of 4,000 hours field service and 80 hours classroom instruction is required. 4,000 hours is approximately 2-years when working 8-hours a day, 5-days a week.
- NOTE: The actual license is issued by the State of North Dakota, not the trainer.
Firearms Permits (Armed Security Officer)
An armed security officer must be at least Security Officer level.
Armed certifications are renewed annually and expire on September 30th of each year.
The concealed weapons permit and/or constitutional carry does not allow you to carry a weapon while providing security services in the state of North Dakota. You must pass the weapons exam and meet the state's weapons requirements before an armed weapon certification is issued.
- NOTE: A Carry Concealed Weapon (CCW) permit does not qualify a security guard to carry armed.
Renewal and Continuing Education Requirements
All licenses and registrations (including armed) expire on September 30th of each year.
Fingerprinting/Background Check
The NDPISB will provide the necessary fingerprint cards upon request. Contact the office and the cards will be forwarded at no charge. It is imperative to utilize the cards supplied by the NDPISB for proper processing of applications.
Disqualifications
Applicants must have not been convicted or adjudged guilty in any jurisdiction of one of the following offenses or its equivalent in another jurisdiction, including juvenile adjudication that the individual has engaged in similar conduct: any felony; any class A or B misdemeanor involving an act of violence or intimidation as defined in North Dakota Century Code chapters 12.1-16 through 12.1-25 and chapter 12.1-31.2 , or involving controlled substances as defined in North Dakota Century Code chapter 19-03.1; any offense involving theft as defined in North Dakota Century Code chapter 12.1-23, including shoplifting, or any other offense which must be reported to the North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation under North Dakota Century Code section 12.1-32-15. This subsection will not prohibit the board from issuing a license or registration to an individual if the board determines the offense does not have a direct bearing upon the individual's ability to provide private security services to the public and the individual has been sufficiently rehabilitated pursuant to the provisions of North Dakota Century Code section 12.1-33-02.1, or a full pardon has been granted.
